OK, here I go again. You’d think I would remember all of this. It’s only been 14 years since I framed…

The following pictures were captured from another site and taken off a topic from a log cabin forum.
Some of you might find it interesting, but be warned, the files are pretty large. It is about architectural animation http://www.logrhythms.com/lrincpro.shtml.

The pictures are very similar to the cabin I am building.
I will have a second floor shed dormer as pictured.
I really want to have the main roof continue across the lower portion of the upper dormer.
(Make sense?)

Will I be able to do this by snapping a line along the dormer, following the main roof (rafter) line, nailing on a 2x6 and nailing short rafter tails to this board?
It is not pictured, but will the horizontal nailing board, along with the framing for the soffit be enough to support the weight of this short overhang?

Do you plan to follow the rake or put in a horizontal soffit?

And it really depends on how big it is. I really don't care for what I am seeing in those photos. No soffit to help with the weight, and looks like snowload country. They are putting a lot of faith in that fascia.

If your dormer comes all the way out to the exterior wall like the one in that picture, why not just leave it off?

Yeah the dormer will come all the way out to the first floor wall line.
The only reason I would like to have the roof line is to shade two first floor windows below which face south.
It wasn't until seeing this picture that I even thought about it being possible to do without there being a porch below.
The image is from computer software and as such, there is probably not as much put into structural integrity as there is visual appeal.

If it is possible to do, I would plan on horizontal soffit.
But imagine the labor and $ saved by just leaving it off...hmmmm...

If y ou look closely that dormer is set back from the exterior main wall. This means if you do the same, your short rafters will actually sit on the wall, like a normal rafter would.

Then again... from the front it looks flush, from the back it looks set back.

Grumpy,
I think that is an illusion created by the pass logs on the butt and pass corner system in the second picture.
