I am trying to find out what the best books are for teaching to framing roofs with different pitches.?
More specifically how to calculate a valley between two roofs that have different pitches?
I have researched many of the books available and would like to know
which are worthwhile.

Randy,

There's two books that I would highly recommend and between both of them you'll get just about all the information you'll need to know.

"Roof Framers Bible"

"A Roof Cutter's Secrets"

How do you figure your roofs. Do you use a framing square, Calculator, Scientific Calculator or Construction Master Calculator?

Randy:

If you have a grip on some basic trig, try:

http://ca.geocities.com/xpf51/LOG_AND_TIMBER_FRAMING_ANGLES/

The documents titled Deck Angles and Common Rafter Angles should explain enough theory to calculate the basic angles for most roof systems.

Calculators may be found at:

http://ca.geocities.com/xpf51/ANGLE_CALCULATORS/

The html calculator labelled Lag will calculate framing angles. Don’t be intimidated by the rather lengthy list, you’ll only likely be needing about five or six of the values at most. Due to the custom nature of the work and the variety of possible joints, the applications of the math aren’t covered isn’t covered in nit-picking detail. There are so many different intercepting planes and angles that such an attempt would be an exercise in futility.

Hopefully this will help you with the theory, if not the application. :)

I frame with the square and Construction Master.

More complicated stick framing is relatively new to me so I am experiencing a bit of a learning curve.

I am trying to buy the books you recommended right now.

All those links are perfect.

It is just what I need.

I have sucessfully ordered the books from the links. Takes awhile to
get up here in Ontario .

Randy,

Do you have the Construction Master Pro Trig Plus 111 ?

Joe Carola

I do.

I wouldn't frame without one.

The IV will get you by in most situations.

The Pro and Pro Trig come in handy for arches and such.
