Hi Folks,

I worked my way through school doing framing carpentry in the summers and now I'm about to start on an addition to my house (putting my REAL education to work).

My uncle (who employed me in summers) gave me a slightly used Senco framing nailer (FP752XP) as a "future housewarming" present to use on the addition. As I start to put together my fastener order, am somewhat bamboozled by the fact that very few nailers can shoot true common shank nails, and the common shank strip nails that are available, are only available in bright. No HDG, heck no electro galv. either.

Of course, the plans specify that all the external sheathing should be nailed with 10d Common HDG nails, my shoulder is aching thinking about nailing those by hand.

So...

Am I missing something, and when I walk into the lumber yard to order fasteners will they chuckle at me and be able to order what I need... or do most framers just use the smaller shank nails that are available in more options.

I'm sure that I dealt with this a few years back.. but I'm spacing on it big time.

Thanks a ton folks!
Matt

I got the PC palm nailer two weeks ago. My plans to put it to serious use have been delayed, but the couple of tests I ran with it make me look forward to nailing. If you can't get the right nails for your gun, the palm nailer will drive nearly anything. $130 from my local guys.

Senco 2 3/8" galv ring shank nails are common around here. Heck, I have 3/4 of a box I'll sell you. :) Maybe you're being too picky. Go with the flow and choose something that work, not what the specs are. I don't remember seeing many lumber yards in Santa Cruz. Maybe better head to the HD in Palo Alto or wherever.

I just had this same spec on a house I'm framing (10 d as called out by engineer). Use a 2"1/2 x .148 nail, they come in a box of 5000 vs 4000 in a box of 3x.131's. If you have a nail supplier vs lumber yard in your area they will have them in HDG also.
