its been a while since i did any work. now im putting an addition on my house, and during the framing inspection, the inspector told me i need a fire stop. i had cut off the overhang (eves) of my exisiting roof, revealing my attic. he said it must be all blocked off so fire doesnt spread in there.
ok, so how? and with what?
thanx.

Revealing the attic from inside? Fireblocking is typically at the top and bottom of walls - some codes have it listed at every 8-10' also - just depends on where you're at and what version of the code they use.

You must close off the hole with solid wood between every rafter, from plate to plywood.

If he asked for a firestop your question to him should have been...
Of what rating? Do you need a 1, 2, or 3 hour rating on the wall?

Now, if any ducts run through the firestop ask him if they have to have fire dampers of the same rating, and what ducts they have to be installed in. Get it done then inspected before you close it in.
