I am to the point on my project of laying the tile but I am not sure how to lay it out and I was wondering if some of you intelligent folks could help a dumb country boy. :?
I have added 2 bedrooms, a bath and a laundry room and I am going to tile every room w/the same type of tile. I am wondering how I go from room to room. Everything I have read says to section the room off into 4 equal parts and start from the center and work out but how do you keep that consistancy from room to room? Do your tiles not match up at the doorways? Any help would be appreciated. I hope I made this clear.
Thanks

From my sister, who is my tile expert:
you can either tile straight through with a gap (for a marble saddle, even with the same flooring), or just go without the gap.
Pick a door as the main entrance, and center the tiles on that door, not the center of the room. You can then move the pattern back and forth (away and towards the door) from that direction to center it on another wall (center in the x-direction on one door, and in the y-direction on another door). You'll want your cuts on the edges of the room though. You can go with either a grid or a diamond pattern, but it all depends on the layout of the doors. You don't want the pattern to look wierd in the room, and you don't want the pattern to look wierd at the doors. You don't start with a full tile in the corner (she thinks you already know this).
It's all a little subjective, but you just want to minimize the pieces of tile, and when you need to have pieces, you want to keep them in the corners and edges.

Thanks for you help. That seems to make sense.
Tell your sister thanks for the info. :)
Good info, I can't add nothing to it. She said it all, or you did. :D

Can yall tell me if you normally lay the tile first and then set the vanity or do you set the vanity and tile around it?
Thanks again
I would set vanity first.. makes it easier to change tile at a later date if need be and you can hide any shim space.

I have one more question for you Rich. Around the toilet do I place the flange first and then tile or do I tile up to the pipe and then put the flange on top of the tile.
Thanks for all your help.
The toilet isn't as critical IMO - but I've always set the flange and then tiled up to it. The bolts for setting the toilets are plenty long enough and the wax rings will account for any tile - unless you're going with 3cm granite or something.
