I am getting ready to finish my basement and have a question or two about the wall framing. The ceiling height is 125 1/2" tall. What would be the best method to go about framing this? Should I get 12 foot 2X's and cut them down, or should I create an 8' wall then a shorter wall on top of that? I think the second option would be more cost effective, but is it alright to do it that way? These would be non-load bearing walls.

I think I remember an episode of Hometime, where they built the walls using the second method, not that it makes it correct!... what is the deal with that program anyway, do they really think we think they are married? any help is appreciated

IMO the right way is to do a full height wall. By the time you are done buying the 12' pieces versus cutting up a bunch of 8' pieces to make the second wall on top - I would imagine it'll be about the same amount of waste.
Another option is to use 3 plates with 10'ers which would get you to 124.5" tall and then infill.. of course that'll cost more money also.

Yeah, I agree with Rich. Just go ahead and do a full 12' wall, it will save you time and money.

String a chalk line up and cut each stud individually. Never assume that they will all be the same.

And yes, full length. Putting a hinge in the center of a wall is never a good idea.

If you're that set on it, - - use the 10's with a top and bottom plate (123") - - then attach a 'connecting' block every 4' or so to tie in to your first floor joists, - - then just run your drywall 'wild' to the top (125 1/2" point). I'd still use cut-off 12's at the doorways for strength and rigidity.

Thanks for the quick response guys. I am planning on going the 12' route, I like what Dragon said about a hinge in the middle of the wall. I can always do something with the scrap anyways. Thanks for the help.
