home is under construction. My exterior walls are 2x6 but my contractor ordered doors with a 4" jamb. He realizes the mistake but says the carpenters will "fix it up" and I will "never be able to tell the difference". I don't know alot about this, but it seems to me that the doors would be returned and the appropriate size ordered. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I would probably return the doors. You can make extension jambs but in my opinion it's one more joint in a system that's prone to move to begin with. Is what they will do is rip down 1x material and mate it with the existing jamb to extend it the additional 2". Where the two pieces meet up, as I said, is one more place to see a separation down the road. It'll probably look pretty good to start with but will eventually separate.

Hi Jsides,

Demand the doors be returned. Your Contracters mistake doesn't need to be your future problem.

The biggest problem on job sites is passing the buck. Or passing a mistake or problem off to the next contractor.

Your walls are 2X6 and doors and windows with 2X6 jambs should be used.

Your general contractor is the person who should be seeing mistakes even his/her own and fixing them.

Never ever settle for less than what you should be getting. It's your house and your money being spent.

As someone whose been around the home construction field for over a decade. This kind of stuff just burns me up.

If the house plans call for 2X6 walls and the installation of doors and windows with 2X6 jambs.

Then your constractor must use them.

Good luck
