I need two big bits for putting in some holddowns.
First, I need a 1" with a working distance of at least 32".
Second, I need a 3/4" with a working distance of at least 38".
I have a SDS+ hammer and would like to use it, but if not I could rent a SDSmax or SplineDrive. Anyone know where to get these monsters.
thanks

Go to http://www.mcmaster.com/

They got 'em.

McMaster-Carr sells long SDS+ bits, but none of their 3/4" or 1" bits are long enough for my appliction. I have recently found a company that does custom order rotary bits. They (KK Industries) sell a 3/4" x 38" for $101 and a 1" x 38" for $146. Pricy, but still much less than paying $300 each for Hilti bits.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but spline shank is not the same as SDS. I used a big Makita once that used what I would call a spline-shank bit. They were definitely different than the Bosch SDS bits at HD.

Yes, spline is definitely differnet than SDS. In addition, there are two kinds of SDS - one is called plus and one is called max. If I had understood all of this more when I purchased the SDS+ I probably would have forked over the extra bucks for spline - since it is generally easier to get thicker and longer bits.

His first post mentions 'spline-drive' as an option.

Sorry, Tom, didn't mean to yell at you or anything. I missed the point about being able to rent something. They gave me any bit I wanted when I rented the drill. Why not just do that? Certainly cheaper...

I would love to just rent the hammer and/or bits, but upon further research I have discovered two problems. First, none of the rental yards around me rent anything that long. Second, although I can purchase spline drive bits this long, all the spline drive hammers themselves seem to be too wide to fit in the tight space I have. I am going to purchase the custom bits at KK industries. Thanks for all your feedback!
