I am hoping to build a house next year, and the plans I have call for 8" thick foundation walls and 2x4 ext. wall construction. Our code (in the cold NE area) requires 10" thick walls and 2x6 ext. wall construction. Can the foundation contractor easily change the dimensions and requirements from the plans, with the width of the walls expanding to the exterior (thus increasing the overall dimensions of the footprint) or should I have the plans redrawn?
TIA for any help.
BTW - I'm not positive that 10" foundation walls are code, but they are recommended....

Personally I wouldn't pour one less than a 10".. as you said though it's just a recommendation.
In answer to your question.. yes the contractor should be able to easily make those changes without a redraw on the plans. When you get the contract make sure the following is included as part of the scope of work...
1. Door and windows jambs to fit 2x6 exterior walls.
2. Basement egress window jambs to match a 10" foundation wall.
3. 10" foundation walls
etc..etc..

Thank you for the answer. That's what I wanted to hear, and thanks for the advice on the contract. I probably wouldn't have thought of those things.
