I AM RE-FRAMING THE ROOF OF MY KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM. I WANT CATHEDRAL CEILINGS. I DON'T LIKE THE LOWER PITCH OF SCISSOR TRUSSES, SO I AM PLANNING ON 2X12 RAFTERS. I HAVE 5/12 PITCH NOW. 27' ACROSS THE 2 ROOMS, 14' WIDE. WHERE SHOULD THE TIES GO? I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE 2 SKYLIGHTS IN ONE OF THE ROOMS. SHOULD I HAVE A RIDGE BOARD OR BEAM AND WHAT SIZE?

there have been a couple threads by learning that have touched on this, you might want to check those first. A drawing would be helpful. I would expect you'd have to support them with a ridge beam which would need to be suported at each end. The problem with that isn't at the exterior wall, it's where the new section would mate with the original trusses (if I'm picturing this right). I would plan on putting either a post under that section (the trusses aren't designed to take additional weight supported in the middle of them), or supporting the whole ridge beam with a wall that runs the full height. If you don't understand what I'm trying to say, that's ok, I'm having trouble understanding exactly what you're situation is.
