We're reusing the old cast iron tub but the new drain I got from HD didn't fit. Either the top piece was too big (diameter) to drop far enough, or the threads aren't long enough to grab the drain below. They touch, but can't turn it enough to get a good connection. Do they make special drains for old tubs?

Not sure if they make special drains for old tubs, but you can buy a drain for a whirlpool tub that is longer than what is used for standard. Take a look at one at your local HD. I bought one for about 80 or 90 bucks.

Oh, I forgot about this. A friend of a friend had the drain they removed form a bathroom remodel that fit perfectly. I think it was the difference between Gerber and whatever HD sells that didn't fit. The threads on the Gerber start a lot farther up on the drain and allow for more threads to catch.

Hd drains work fine. You just need to buy extention pipes for the taller hieght. Cost about an extra $2.

The problem wasn't the pipe length, the problem was not enough threads. Anyway, the problem was solved. 3 months ago.

Well, - - although it may have been slightly inconvenient, - - it really would have been the 'polite' thing to do.
I think it's Montyx's fault for signing on so damn late
Montyx may be new, - - but he's given a pretty lot of good answers already, - - he's therefore experienced enough to get 'picked on' already!!
