I would like to develop a spreadsheet that I can use to quickly :? price decks while I am at a client's home. Using a laptop and mobile printer that is. Is this wise or should I take the time to price each one individually?
The variables that I have determined so far are: Decking surface, railing type, stairs (elevation, open or closed), height off ground, gravel with or without geotextile or none at all.
I am planning on using the nominal dimensions of the deck to determine the material requirements, meaning I will use the squared off dimensions to determine lumber requirements.
To determine labour requirements I am planning to assign X number of labour minutes to each peice of lumber needed to build the deck. For example a 10' X 12' deck will need 9 pcs of 10' 2 x 8 joists. Assign 30 min to each joist gives (9 * 30) / 50 = 5.4 hrs to layup & layout and assemble the joist structure.
Are there any huge flaws in my thinking? If you see them, do not worry abut insulting me, I have teenage daughters, according to them I know nothing.
