I'm planning a room addition (maybe 12x14), but was contemplating a wrap-around porch to go with it. I want it to look like part of the house, and be covered by the hip roof (as opposed to a flat roof extending from the exterior wall), but I'm a little lost on how to do it. I've looked on the web for some basic plans for covered porches, but haven't come up with anything to match my scenario. I recently completed a room addition on the other side of the house with a 'normal' 1.5' overhand, but I'm not sure how I cover the porch with the much larger overhang and still have 8' walls, etc. (I've contemplated raising the room to 9' which will give me around a 4' overhang on a 3/12 pitch roof). Or do I treat the porch "wall" as the load bearing wall and build as if the room was 16x22 (4' porch on 3 sides) with an internal 12x14 room? That seems complicated since the porch posts would be 4' o.c. or something like that. I'm also planning to extend the concrete slab foundation for the new room, but if the porch is loadbearing, the slab would need to be 16x22, and preclude a wood deck type porch which I thought would be nicer. I feel like I'm missing something simple. Any ideas or references would be appreciated.

I apologize for not answering this sooner. I've been in Texas for a scheduling seminar. I'll try and get you an answer tonight.
