I have a cottage that was built in the early 1930s. Sometime in the past, a previous owner added on a 10'X29' addition underneath the gable on the rear of the house.

I need to replace the roofing on that addition, and I am considering using 5V metal roofing material. It is a flat roof with a 4/12 pitch.

I am unclear on how to flash the 5v metal roof sheets where it butts against the existing wood siding underneath the gable of the house.

1. Do I need to take the siding off completely and install the flashing underneath it??

2. Can I cut a section off the bottom of the siding, install the trim and piece it all back together using Z-flashing where I cut my siding?

3. Is there any acceptable way to flash the 5V roofing on the siding without cutting the siding ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike

If you can get it pushed up behind it enough (6") then no cutting. If you have a 6" exposure on the siding (for lap siding) the overall height of each piece would be around 7 1/2" or more the nails will be at least 6" above to give you enough room. Of course, that is only if you end up having a full piece of siding above the new roof deck :)

Thanks for the fast reply. I am not sure if I can slide the flashing under there or not. I have learned not to be too hopeful when dealing with this old house hehe.

One other question, because the 5V roofing material is not "flat", (because of the V's), should the flashing be placed underneath the 5v sheeting and a tar-type sealent placed on the leading edge of the 5V, or should the flashing go on top of the 5V sheets. If on top, how sould the space between the flashing and 5V be sealed?

It should go on top of the roofing. They sell spacers that will take care of the valleys between the peaks.
