These tiles were installed with nearly 1/2" of smelly goopy glue (the consistency of play dough) in large patches which had air gaps behind them (kind of like an ant farm). They were installed nearly flush with a paper think layer of some kind of grout sealer between each tile. The backs of the tiles have an almost plastic feeling and have striped grooves across them.

Is there a problem using thinset?

is the old material cleaned off? I dont really see a problem using thin set with them..didja clean the grooves out...they will help the tiles adhere to the thin set....

They're all scraped and will be cleaned with chemicals to make them squeaky clean. We begin tiling this week. We're going to try to make it without a grout line. We'll put them up like bricks with mortar on the edges and squeezing them together.
