I have a very strange situation that I need some advice on.

I finished my addition this last week and one of the rooms was a laundry room. My washer and dryer were out back in a storage building and I had run AC to the building for my washer and dryer. They worked fine out there but when I move my dryer into my house it quit. I checked my voltage at the plug (its a 3 prong plug) and I get 240 across L1 and L2 and 120 from the neutral across L1 & L2. So I started tearing into my dryer checking all of the connections, fuses, etc. but I couldn't find anything wrong. I called the appliance repairman and he said it sounded like an electrical problem so he said bring it in and they would plug it in and check out for $20. So instead of bring it in I took the same plug and wired it back out in the storage building and carrier my dryer out there and plugged it in and it works. So I went back and checked all my connections at the breaker box and everything is tight. I am way confused at this point. :?

I am using 10 gauge wire and the run is maybe 50ft. Do yall think that is to far?

Define "quit." Worked once buyt stopped working? Starts but stops right away? Doesn't work at all?

A three-prong dryer outlet has no "neutral" it has two hots and a ground. A four-prong outlet has two hots, a neutral and a ground.

It's a 30A outlet, right? 10ga. should be fine for that at 50'

Are you testing with a digital voltmeter or an analog one?

vector,

Thanks for the reply.

You are right the 3 prong has a ground and not a neutral, my bad.

Since I posted earlier I spoke to a local electrcian and he told me that I need to tie the ground wire to the ground and neutral bars in the breaker. So I went home and tried that and sure enough my dryer works now. Don't clearly understand why but he said the dryer had a computer in it that is looking for both.

Thanks again.
