I see this being done quite often lately, especially in my area where there are a lot of cracked basement concrete floors. I'm planning on buildin the basement walls on piles. So of course, I have some questions:

1) How exactly is the wood basement floor (sometimes called 'structural floor') constructed?

2) Does anyone have a link to a drawing of one?

3) How does drainage work? Sump pump?

4) How big of a space under the floor?

5) What are the possible pros and cons of this type of basement floor?

I know - lots of questions :)

My basement floor is constructed out of metal framing (light guage I believe) with OSB over that. Beyond that I couldn't tell you much on the way this type of floor is constructed. I would assume ther is a ledge angle (metal most likely) that the metal joists sit on. Looking through the space around some pipes it looks like it's around 2' down to ground level.
We do not have a sump pump in ours but it would be pretty simple to add one. A culvert with a float activated pump. I think ours has excellent perimeter drain so have never had a problem.
Pros is that you don't have to worry about the slab heaving due to expansive soils.. you won't have to float your walls. Cons - moisture and metal typically don't mix so you should have some type of air floor under it.
