ok, running wires to a new addition ceiling fan, 12 feet high. to use a remote control one, do i have to run a 3 wire conductor, or will two do?
Read the Instructions :)
That's kind of a copout - but it really depends on what the mfg requires. Select fan and then rough-in.

Run 3 conductor just in case and cap extra wire if you want.

First read the box. Some place it should say "To open see the instructions enclosed" :D
That's actually true. I bought a generator once with a pretty elaborate packaging box/framing around it. I just started ripping and tearing - out pops a manual which on the front page says "READ THIS FIRST".. and wouldn't you know it - the instructions on opening the box.. haha.

I don't call them instructions any more. I always tell the boys to get me the distructions out of the box.

Running three wire will give you the opportunity to connect a light on the fan and the fan itself on separate switches. Some people like that option. On most fans, the instructions show you different methods for wiring, three wire or 2 wire. I agree with Sparks and Vector. Run the 3 wire and if you need it, you can use it. If not needed, no big deal.

my opinion, not even a question, run 3 wire...
may decide the remote is anoying, or it breaks, and you just want a switch on the wall.... once that drywall goes on, it sure ain't fun to fish wires.
