Here's my latest 'before-and-after' of going from a wrought iron to an oak balustrade. The oak is stained with 2 coats of MinWax Polyshades 'Old Maple', the spindles are pre-finished white.
Nice work - 200% improvement.

A vast improvement.
What is your spacing between spindles?

At the widest point or between the flats?
No way the original was up to code.
Ever seen an inspector perform the ball test? They'll have a 4" diameter ball on a stick and if they can pass it through anywhere you fail.
