Greetings all. Not sure if this is the best place for this question, but here goes. I had some ceiling damgae in 2 rooms this past winter from ice dams. The problem with the roof has been taken care of and now the ceilings have to be redone. My insurance adjuster has made his inspection and I am awaiting the results. He stated that what had to be done was the following:

Remove and replace the damaged sections of blueboard.
Plaster over the new section.
Plaster over the entire room to make everything match.

My ceilings are old style swirled with ( I am told ) mica mixed in. I have been told by 2 different plasterers when I got estimates that the only way to do the job right was to either remove the entire ceiling and replace or remove and replace the damaged section, then add a new layer of blueboard over the entire ceiling before plastering. I was told that the reason for this is that the ceiling is covered with many layers of latex paint and that the plaster is not designed to adhere properly to latex. Additionally, if this was done, there was a good chance that the plaster could separate and fall. Please help. I need an unbiased opinion. Do I need to fight the insurance company on this? Is the repair he stated feasible and lasting? Thanks all.

Is taking it all out and going with sheetrock out of the question? I've been dealing with plaster for a year. It sucks. It looks great, but I'll never put it in where I can use sheetrock. If you're dead set on the plaster, I would go with the plaster guy's plan. Ask the adjuster how much it would cost if 50lbs of plaster fell on some poor child.
