Does anyone have experience with composite landscaping timbers? I need to rip out some railroad ties used in a retaining wall due to carpenter ants and I like the idea of using the composite landscaping timbers. It makes me feel all eco-friendly and all, never mind the savings over retaining wall bricks. I've skimmed an EPA study suggesting a plastic/sawdust-type timber might work better than 100% plastic.
However, I'm wondering a) how these hold up given the temp extremes of Iowa and b) if there is any advice/tips on construction with them. I've read on the diy network that I need to use carbide blades to cut them. Any other gotchas with composite landscape timber?
