I'm getting a cabin built on my property in Western Montana and need some advice on roof venting.
The pitch is going to be 8 in 12, cathedral cielings with 11 7/8" BCI rafters. Most people in that area lay down OSB and screw the metal roofing to it. A contractor told me that this would usually be a "hot roof" and no venting would be accomodated in the eaves.
I told him I didn't really like the idea of screwing into OSB, as my experiences here in Texas are that after a few years the screws have nothing to hold them, and that I wanted to lay 2x4 or 2x6 purlins perpendicular to (gable to gable) and on top of the BCI rafers which would provide some "meat" for the screws as well as make the job much easier and safer, and possibly cheaper since no decking would be used.
He said he hadn't done it that way before and was uncertain if vents should be installed in the eaves.
Anyone had any experiences with this or recommendations?
