I installed a metal roof two years ago and now the snow and ice break all my stink pipes when it slides off the roof. After the first time, I installed some metal peices in the shape of an upside-down V above the pipes to divert the snow to either side....but the pipes still broke. My roof pitches are 4/12 and 3/12. Does anyone have any ideas to prevent this? Can I run the pipes out a gable end?

Ahh, I'm glad I only put my vent pipes about 5' from the peak of the roof. Not enough inertia at that point...

What are your vent pipes made out of? PVC? I don't like PVC myself, I think it's too brittle. Anyway, if you dig around your local home center, you should be able to find metal roof vent flashing. I'm thinking that might work.

IIRC, UPC says the vents have to come out of the roof. If you wanted to change the location, I would bring them closer to the peak, like I mentioned mine were. Close to the top, the snow won't have enough velocity to damage your pipes.

I have never heard of that before. Up here we only use ABS that I am aware of.

Around here it's pvc, never see abs, except in mobile homes. I've never seen pvc vent pipes break before. Why not try schedule 80, heavy wall pvc? Just a thought.

Thats a new one on me :? I'VE GOT IT :!:

This 4th of July buy a bunch of bottle rockets and next winter you can shoot them at the roof peak. Thats the way they prevent avalanches.
You just have less boom to clear. :D (and buy a Saint Bernard)
