Foundation drainage test

My neighbour asked for my help after he got some water into his basement during the snowmelt.

I think the problem is fairly straightforward - the site drainage from that area was very poor. My concern is regarding testing the drainage. I didn't really want to advise him to make the corrections, and then wait till next year to see if it all works, but I drew a blank on how to test.

Any suggestions?

The only way I can think of is to put a sprinkler out there for a couple days straight and see what happens.
