I am looking to replace a 21 linear foot long, 18" high retaining wall currently made of rotting 6x6's. A fence will be built along the low side of the retaining wall, hence, cosmetically, the retaining wall will not be seen.
The top of the wall will be flush with interlock pavers. I am looking for suggestions as to a low cost, solid material from which to construct this wall. One option is to use blocks but am hoping to find something less than $3/stone (which at 170 pieces would cost $750 tax in). Thanx in advance for your ideas?

I've seen retaining walls around here made with used railroad ties. I'm not sure what the cost is for those things, but I would think you'd be able to save some money if you could use them.

Check out this site:

I was quoted $32 lf for Fencestone materials on a 5 ft high fence. It can be used to retain up to 3 ft.

Railway ties rot, the ones you get from the hardware store are used, used HARD...have you considered gabions?

I have to replace an 85 foot long 36 inch high RW tie retaining wall..It's not going to be fun...

I'm considering this type of wall as it will allow drainage through the wall face while maintaining the integrity of the wall, ie it relieves hydro-static pressure.
