Now that I've installed a toilet and a utility sink in my basement I'm thinking I should go ahead and do the shower/tub as well. As I look at the floor there is a recessed area of rough concrete. Why is the drain pipe covered in concrete this way? I assume I'll have to break it up to find out what's below. Is there a specific reason for this and how deep will I have to go? The house is 2 years old so this is SOP for most builders. TIA, Bob.

Shouldn't be too deep. Typically it will have duct tape over it and just a thin slurry over top.. that is if the plumber coordinated with the concrete guys.
