View Full Version : Good books???
Can anyone recomend some good books that give specific building information on complete home building for the do it yourselfer? Im looking for something that will give good examples and pictures that I can use for a highschool construction class. Also, does anyone know of any good books about construction management?
Francis Ching wrote a book called "Building Construction Illustrated" which I believe now is into the 3rd edition. It's not a book that's going to show you or teach you how to build... it's more geared towards what each of the elements of a structure are. For instance, floors, can be made of concrete, wood, steel, etc.. it goes through all those different materials with some details on each of them.
A really good book on construction management that I got from school is "Professional Construction Management" by Donald Barrie and Boyd Paulson. It's not cheap but has everything on management from CM, Design-Build, and GC.

There probably isn't just one book that will answer all your questions. Your local library will have lots of books. The magazine rack at your local food store has piles of related stuff. Every house has something different which isn't explained in detail. One littel trick which I haven't seen in any book was to make the wall which contains the plumbing stack out of 2x6 rather than 2x4. Photostat everything that interests you and keep in a file that you can find again.
