View Full Version : adding a new register to a new room in basement
I am wanting to add hvac to a room that I am putting in a basement. the basement already has some registers run to parts of it which I had put in when the house was built. Im splitting one big area into two rooms. the large area has registers run to it but the other one does not. the duct work is right overhead in the new room without registers. would it be possible to cut the duct and add a register and return to the new room or will this cause problems?

When you say the ductwork is right over head. The big square stuff or the round stuff. If it is the big square one then yes you can cut into it add the boot then run some round duct to where ever youwant it.
Do you want to add return air to the new room? Return air and supply air are two different things. If you want to add return air to the new room which is always a good idea you can cut into the large return air duct and run some round duct like you did with the supply.
Some people cut the square duct and just add the grill at that point. Probably not the greatest idea but sometimes it is the easiest option. Just try to keep the airflow from roaring out with will take away airflow from other area. Air will go out the easiest and quickest way.

It depends on the rest of the system. You will have to add returns but the room load may be so low that you may freeze yourself. Run the load calculations on the two areas to find out what is needed. You may want to seperate the basement area from the rest of the building and put in a zone damper and thermostat. Is the entire basement underground or is it walk out with some exposed walls?
