Hello,
I've gutted my bathroom (to the studs and subfloor) and need to know how to go about putting in a tiled shower. What kind of contractor would be helpful with getting the shower floor done? Would tile or some kind of a shower pan be best? I'm at a complete loss with this thing.
Thanks for your help!

IIRC, there was another thread on this sort of thing. Try some searching. For a sub, go to a local tile supply house. I find much better service and knowledge there than the box stores, and they know installers.

Lots of books at Home Depot explaining just what you need to do.
You gutted everything and now you ask questions? It reminds me how I got started;)

You have a few options. I've been dealing with this myself, and I've decided to put down a bed of 1/2" durock, then a vinyl pan liner. Then durock on the walls. Then mortar to make the slope, and thinset and the tiles.

That documents things pretty well, the only differences in what I'm doing are substituting durock for the first layer of mortar, and using durock instead of water resistant drywall.
If you aren't doing it yourself, a tile subcontractor should be able to handle everything except maybe the drain itself.

Hello,
Thanks for all your answers. The bathroom had to go - it was just disgusting, so gutting it wasn't really an option. I spoke with one tile person and he said a carpenter needed to come in and frame for the shower floor. Does this sound right?
If I can't figure out the shower, I may end up with a powder room and a larger clothes closet...

Before you get to the shower floor you need to look at the plumbing.... Is it up to code? Do you have 2" pvc with a catch? THen you need to put down a good sub floor, then your pan liner, then your mud bed with a slight slope to the drain then the tile. Screw up one of those steps and youll have a leaking shower for a very long time.

All great points! I'm looking into all that. Also I've realized I need some additional support under the house, so I guess that will be done before anything else.
Pandora's box has nothing on this house!
