Last night the fan on the outside unit stoped working. It was about 4 hrs before this was discovered, the compressor ran for that length of time. I replaced both condensers and the fan runs fine now, but I am not getting any cooling. The compresor runs (hums and vibrates) but is very hot, cant hold your hand on it.Any suggestions? Some one told me to check the contacts as the comp. may be single phasing.???? Can the compressor running so long without the fan mess it up?.....Thanks for your help....Clueless in Texas
PS...Is it time to call in an expert?

Yep When you say condensers do you mean capacitors? If so you have to repalce with the correct voltage rating and size.
Exactly what did you replace with what?
Keep the unit off until the compressor cools down.

Richard you are correct, I did mean capacitors, sorry. I took each of the capacitors to the hvac parts co. and they gave me what I assume is the equivelant part. One was just for the fan motor it had two leads. The other was for the fan,the compressor and the hermmatic it has three leads. Thanks

On the capacitor with 3 terminals one ouside terminal should be marked HERM the other outside terminal sould be marked FAN. Make sure you have the compressor and fan on the correct terminals.
The second capacitor with 2 terminals is for what?
The indoor blower motor?

Yes sir,the three prong is marked Fan,C,and HERM I was sure to hook it up the way it came off. The second Capacitor is also for the outside fan. All the new parts are connected exactly as the old ones were.

you may need what is called hard start assist. It looks like a black round cylinder just a little larger than the run capacitor. Two wires on the top. One wire goes to the center common post and the other side to the HERM terminal on the dual capacitor. They come in three or four diferent sizes. Get the one that is good up to 5HP. (5 ton). If that does not get the compressor started you are out of luck.
Make sure the terminals on the compressor are all intact.
