I had an out of town drafter draw up plans for a home I would like to build. Little did I know that I would have to have an engineer or architec finish the plans.

Anyway, I have a friend who is a structual engineer. He has provide more detail and beam sizes to my plans, but I am concerned that he may doing something wrong.

My home is a 2472sqft home with 1320sqft on the first floor with a full 8' basement with all exterior walls being 2x6. I am using I-Joist for flooring and engineered roof trusses. There are 3 bedrooms upstairs and an open, 2story greatroom .

The problem is he has sized my footings at 48 inches x 12 inches w/5 cont #5 rebar. This seems pretty large from what my limited experienc shows. He says that this is what the numbers say he should provide. Also the basement walls are 8" .

Can someone provide some help on the issue or their professional opionion on the size of the footing

The 48 inch may be a little big.. but it really depends on what the soil conditions are in that area. I wouldn't suggest anything less than 8" foundation walls... if you do it will crack all that much quicker.
Anyway.. ask what his thoughts are.. ask him what the deciding factor was for sizing.. I can pretty much guess it'll be soil bearing pressure.
