Hi,
I will soon be shingling a gambrel roof barn. How should the ridge where the steep roof meets the shallow roof be roofed? Is there a special flashing for that or can it all be done with shingles?

Thanks!

I think it could be done with all shingles but personally I would use flashing also. Roof the lower section up past the "bend" then put flashing down (standard low angle flashing) then roof over flashing with steep section. Hopefully Grumpy will have a better explanation with a name for the type of flashing that should be used.

Let's break the roof down into two parts. Mansard (very steep) and Roof. Typically we will roof the mansard first. Yes we will fold the shingle over the top of the mansard then onto the roof.

Usually before we even begin insalling the shingles we will install and Ice shield 1'2'... meaning 1' overhaning on the mansard and 2' on the roof section. Before we begin roofing the mansard we will use a typical ODe (Outside Drip Edge) http://rollex.com/BuyersGuide/alre.htm . We do this because we like our shingles to overhang, like they would if it was at a gutter line. The ODE adds support to the shingles.

Any flashing at the intersection of roof to mansard is better than nothing. Shingles are not meant to flex so should not be folded over.
