Hi Folks...

Not sure if this is the right place for this or not... but I have an adjustment to my build that I need to figure out. The situation is this... the addition has 2 roof sections, one with a 7/12 pitch (stick framed cathedral ceilings) and one with a flat roof section (which is a truss system). The 7/12 section is supposed to "flow" right into the flat section.

The wall heights to support the 7/12 section and make it "flow" were on the plans. The issue is that due to some setback changes the width of the 7/12 section was reduced by 6 inches. So obviously those wall heights will need to change as well.. as the narrower section will have the roof line coming in a bit too high. So.. as it's a 7/12 roof section, should I just lower the wall heights by 3 1/2 inches? (based on 6 being 1/2 of 12.. and 3.5 being 1/2 of 7) It makes sense to me.. but I'm not sure if I'm am over simplifying.

Thanks!

Matt

Matt, can you sketch this for me? I am sure I can help you but I am having a hard time seeing it.

Are you talking about the ceiling or the roof?

I'll do you one better, I scanned the drawing from the plans. As you can now see the rafters well rafter tails, on the right side are supposed to hit right on the flat section of the truss box.

The problem that arose is that we had to narrow this room 6 inches because of side yard setback, and the wall heights (6 foot 9 and 12 foot 2) will make the rafters hit the truss framed section in a different spot.

I'm thinking that since the roof is a 7/12 slope, that if I drop the wall heights 3.5 inches that it should be okay, but I"m not sure if I am over simplifying.

Thanks for all your help!

Matt

I certainly may be simplifying this but in essence you are moving the 6'9" wall to the right 6". So why not just make the 6' 9" wall 3.5" taller and keep the taller wall at 12' 2". 3.5" sounds right to me

6" in length times 7 divided by 12 equals 3.5"

just a thought

You know.. That's a great idea and I like that idea MUCH better.. having a wall that was 6' 5.5" didn't sound very good to me. Mainly because I'm 6'5!

Thanks!
