hi there,
what would be the best way to frame a 4x8 balcony on upper floor,
1- extend the I-joist 4'
2- sister 2x10x8 to I-joist
3- use a ledger board on the rim joist
thanks,
Depends on interior versus exterior.
Interior - extending floor joist would probably be the easiest as long as the back frame is in a ratio of 2:1 with the cantilever
Exterior - I don't like to cantilever exterior unless it's completely enclosed. A ledger board on the rim joist would be my choice.

1) You can't extend I-joist for a Balcony
2) That you can do.
3) If you do that you will have to support the balcony with special brackets or footings and posts.
Here's a link for I-joists.

Steeve,
If your going to sister a 2x10 then the I-joist your using should be 11-7/8" because you don't want to use a 9-1/2" I-joist and sister a 9-1/2" 2x10 so that the tops are flush. You want to be lower so that the top of balcony wehter your usiing decking or you putting a rubber roof on will be lower than your floor height and properly sealed.
