Wasn't sure where to put a drywall question, so I put it here. On another chatboard, I asked the question, "What do you look for in a quality built home?" Someone responded that they would look for 3/4" sheetrock. I came back with, " They make such a thing?" I can't imagine how heavy and unweildy that would be! So...

Do they make 3/4 inch sheetrock? Do people every specify it for their walls? Would there be any advantages to that? Is that a crazy idea, or common on more expensive, luxury homes?

For standard wallboard the thickest I would use is 5/8". They do make 3/4" and 1" for abuse resistant walls and places where they need 2hr fire ratings. There is not a good reason to use 3/4" unless you are spanning over 24" on a ceiling and even then it doesn't make a lot of sense. It will lessen noise transmission a touch but nowhere near what R-11 insulation will do for less money.

I think I would want 2x6 walls with 1/2 inch sheet rock over 2x4s with 3/4 inch sheet rock.

Yep - been that way for eons and worked just fine. If it's not broken - don't fix it :)
