Which is better to use for a novice like myself when taping drywall joints, paper or self adhesive mesh tape?

Also, is a setting compound necessary for the 1st coat on mesh tape, or can I just use a regular pre-mix compound.

Thanks.

I think the adhesive mesh tape is a bit easier to use. Regular pre-mix is just fine to use.

I would use paper tape.

The mesh I find isn't as strong as the paper and can actually get cut by the corner of the trowel.

Also if there is any dust on the wall then the mesh doesn't stick nearly as well.

My personal opinion is that mesh is garbage. I would never use it for any drywall project I do.

Each his own.. I'm sure the pros don't use it.. but I'm no pro.
