View Full Version : How do I shim a door with attached brickmold

I've installed several prehung doors before but never one with brickmold attached. Usually I set shims at all 6 locations opposing each other in pairs, one from each side (interior/exterior). But with attached brickmold, I won't be able to drive shims in from the exterior side of the door. Do I just set a shim in "butt first" from the interior side up against the brickmold and then drive the other shim in the correct way also from the interior? With that method, I'd have to keep removing the interior shim and breaking it smaller and smaller to get it further into the rough opening (because its tip will hit the brickmold). Is this correct?

Yeah, you put them in from the inside.....but I put mine up and down. I hold the first one in place with my finger or a small pry bar, the drop the other from above.....it drops until they wedge together. If I need the jamb to go to the door a bit more, I just use the pry bar between the back of the jamb and the jack stud.....they just wedge tighter.

I just missed your reply by an hour. My way worked but your way would have been quicker and easier. Thanks.

I pull the side bricks right off and shim the traditional way. Takes 5 minutes to remove them and re-install.
