so i just bought an exterior door from lowe's for $150 that as far as I can tell is virtually identical to the kolbe and kolbe we were planning on ordering (which was around $1000).
here it is -- though it doesn't provide much description on the website.

it appears to me that its solid hemlock (its quite heavy) and each little window appears to have its own pane, although I don't believe its double paned. so far so good, as long as hemlock is an appropriate species in this application.
i'm pretty sure the kolbe was double-paned and another wood species, although I can't remember which one. and it was also being delivered primed and pre-hung. but it seems odd that the difference was so much.
what gives?
