Is there a formula to figure linear foot of concrete block? Example: A crawlspace stem wall with 230 linear foot of wall, 4 block high would need ??? total block.

If you convert the 8" x 16" block to feet, you will have a block that is .67' tall x 1.33' long...
Divide your linear footage of 230' by 1.33' and you will see that you need approximately 173 blocks per course.. So, if you want 4 blocks high (or 4 courses) then just multiply 173 by 4..
Be sure to allow some for waste also..
the formula for estimating concrete block is as follows:
lineal foot x .75 = number of block per course.
number of courses (high) is height in feet x 1.5
ex: a 60' long wall by 10' high
60 x .75 = 45 block per course
and
10' x 1.5 = 15courses
so 15 courses x 45 block =675 plus waste (of course you would have to account for 1/2 block etc.)

Here is my two cents on an old post. Proving there is more than one way to skin a cat.
SFCS (Square footage of contact surface) of block divided by the wall (SFCS) surface
Block 16" (1.333) x 8" (.666) = .887778
Wall = 230' x 2'-8" (2.666)= 613.18 divided by .887778
final CMU count = 691
But with all these computations you will need other block, such as corners, half block and other blocks..

Is there a way to figure out the exact amount of block you need, including the half block and so forth. I now there are software outhere that do just that, so there has to be a formula for it.

Heres what I use
square foot plus 12 percent
example 100 sq.ft.
12 percent of 100 = 12
100 +12 =112 block
1 bg cement pr. 40 block
1 yr sand pr.7 bgs cement

For half block and corner block you just have to look at how you would build each corner and opening.
If you want to get fussy, subtract that amount from the number (but use 12.5% instead of 12% to get the original amount). This will leave you with a theoretical total, but no contractor in his right mind would ever order anything that close but will add 5% for breakage, errors and changes. It is too costly if you come up short.
Most contractors order by the pallet including some extra corner block they can use wherever the please. Some producers will have splittable units that can be made into halves for residential work. - Never for commercial.

In over 40 years and 37 countries, I have never heard of a formula block.

He was asking for the formula to calculate brick in another post. But as long as we're here, I always kinda wanted a formula car.

Don -
Since we all do not have the $2,000,000 (not including spare engines, parts and crew) for a Formula 1 car, you can always look at an Audi R8.
