Hi!

I'm starting to roof my workshop. It's got a gambrel roof w/ 36/12 steep part and 4/12 top part. I've put 30# felt on the first bottom steep part and have 2 rows of 3-tab on.

A couple questions:

1. How important is it to keep the osb decking dry? Half of the roof has been covered w/ visqueen for 8 months and the half I've started with has been up and dry for only a week. Should I put felt on all the decking and just leave the plastic off? It would be wet for pretty much the next 2 or 3 weeks, when I'd finish the roofing. Won't be able to get heat inside until I get the windows and doors in, which will be another month after the roof is finished.

2. The roof is framed with trusses every 2'. I did a crappy job aligning them so there's a couple trusses that overhang maybe an inch or 2 more than the rest of them. This makes for a wavy looking roof when views head on. Any cure for that now, except to look the other way?

I've attached a pic taken before the siding and remainder of the roof sheathing was done.

Thanks :-)

OSB gets wet slowly and it dries out slowly. It also swells permanently especially on the edges. Keep it dry especially at the cut edges.

Thanks, Sweep!

So you'd suggest covering it with the plastic, even when the felt paper is on?

I would.

Get off your rump and shingle the thing Danno.

Good suggestion :-)

Okay. No rain, roofed most the day. Almost got the first steep roof done.

Most of the composition shingles are wet out of the shrink package. Like they'd been sitting out in the rain. Not dripping wet, but definately damp. Any problem if I put those one like that (I did)?

And what's the best way to deal with cutting the edges that hang over the gable end of the roof?

Thanks :-)

No problem if the shingles are damp as long as the sheathing under the underlayment is dry.

The way I cut asphalt rake shingles is to place, mark, turn over, and cut with a mat knife from the back using a framing square so you don't have to cut through the aggregate face. However, I have seen it done by placing all the shingles and then cutting from the face with a mat knife the full length of the rake. I have also seen it done with a circular saw. I can't stand what that does to my knuckles or my saw so I do it the slow but neat way.

Keep at it Danno. As for your initial question, I would buy a tarp to cover the roof between your roofing days. It is very easy to put on and take off and will still be useful when it has served its purpose here.

I know it's too late, but I will chime in anyways. USe CDX, not OSB and use felt AND a tarp as temporary protection. Heck it's a shed so use just the felt but if it were living space I'd use both.
