I will not be posting for another week or so.

I cut my left thumb with a circular saw from the tip straight down to my knuckle.

14 hours in the ER and 1 plastic surgeon and 29 stiches later.

I am on Vicodin so I am out of it and will be for the next week.

I also have pictures, will post them later.

When the hell are you going to get a website going? How long has it been since you've had one up. I don't post often, but ever since I was back in college a few years ago you were still having problems then. Hurry up!

Cole

Yeah and it could have been a lot worse.

I am very lucky.

I see you are doing a good job holding it down while I was gone.

wink, wink.

ouch, man, that's scary.

so how did it happen?

Cole

Here goes the full story:

I hired a new framing crew and they forgot to cut some of the joists with a roof cut so they wouldnt be sticking out of the roof. Well, my decker was waiting on them to cut them and they were just not showing up so I jumped up there and cut them off. I had about 6 to cut and on the very last one a wind gust almost knocked me off while I was trying to cut it and the saw jammed. Well when the saw jammed it kicked back and it was either my chest or my hand so I grabbed it with my left hand.

Then it happened.

is it going to heal fully?

Cole
11-14-2005, 10:38 AM
They took off my fingernail and said it will grow back fully but very very slow.

I am not supposed to do any physical work with it for 4 months.

They are also not for sure if i will ever get feeling back in it.

That sucks.

can't use your thumb for 4 months???

I feel more sorry for you because of that than the injury itself.

Look at it this way...now that you might not have any feeling in your thump, you won't feel it so much if you ever jack your thumb with a framing hammer. I've done that...it made me wish I didn't have any feeling in my thumb.

Yep, as soon as the swelling and bruising goes down, I am in a thumb cast.

rabadger

Glad to hear they can save the thumb. Sorry I checked the forum right before dinner. Nice picture.

Suggestion:
As soon as the cast goes on start picking up the tools and practice. Develope the habbit of working without the use of the thumb. That way if the nevers don't come back you may be able to prevent further damage without knowing it.

I have a finger with nerve damage. It works fine except I have to watch the cold weather. It realy lets me know when the temp is dropping. Got it wrapped around a garage door cable when working on it. 2X4 holding the 16ft old wood door kicked out. pulled 3 fingures into the pulley and cable. Pulled me off the ladder. I hung from the rafters for quite a while before being found. Funny thing no bleeding until we got to the emergency room and they starts scrubbing it. It was about 8 weeks for healing. I never knew three fingers could stop a garage door dead in it's tracks about 2 feet from the floor. When the door is 16 ft wood, you can't pull it back up while hanging in the rafters.

Wow, Richard that had to hurt.

Well, this post will likely get clipped (or moved to the "Jokes" sub-forum) ... I've crushed and broken a finger or two in the past. Nothing as serious as what you guys have experienced but painful all the same. An old timer gave me some advice I've never forgotten:
"Never put your finger anywhere you wouldn't put your p**ker or your tongue."

When Cole gets the thumb cast on he will discover a whole new world to there.

His subs will no longer accuse him of standing around with his thumb up his ***. He may attract added attention to himself. From who is yet to be discovered. He will most likely use it to start making more accurate measurements on the job.

I have no clue what a thumb cast is?

He said it is not very comfortable.

Lets just say you're gonna be giving everyone the ole "thumbs up". My father in-law had to wear one after he got bit by his ancient table saw.

Tell the doc you want the cast that comes with the optional battery pak attachment.

Yeah, odds are the feeling won't quite come back.

I ran two fingers on my left hand through a tablesaw a couple of years ago. (Stupidity) When I think about it they still feel weird.
