My Dad and I were ripping old cribs and timbers from a dock many years ago. We had a modest fire going which he was feeding while I was in the lake doing tear out. I warned him to be careful and the nest thing I knew the fire had caught some junipers and was speading up the hill toward a 2-million dollar cottage. I ran up with only a rake and tried to beat out the flames but it was windy and wasn;t that successful. By now about half an acre was burning. I resorted to taking off my sweater and beating the flames off the cottage deck and wood siding, at the same time screaming call 911! Fortunately our volunteer fire dept. had just
returned from another call and arrived quickly to put out the flames. Not before the deck was all pock marked, all visible vegetation was burned and the hydro phone lines melted of the poles..........but it could have been worse. We fixed averything before the homeowner was called.

Remember what ole Smokey the Bear used to say:

Only YOU can prevent a forest !"

( or something along that line )

Would your insurance have covered it?

It would have but the local authorities fined me for commercial burning
without a permit!

Oh well it could have been much worse!
