My trim carpenter just finished building all the cabinets and trimming the house. My question is can my wife and I handle the staining/finishing of the cabinets or is this something that should be done by a professional? I would like to save the money but then again I would hate to screw up all the custom cabinets. What do you guys think?

That is a big question. You definitely can handle the job if you have a little experience or enough time to gain some experience. I would shy away from any "home store" products that claim to make the job exceptionally easy. Mostly it is a bit of knowledge and a lot of work.

definately a do-it-yourself 'er. Just remember to stain then use steel wool pads to take the grain off of the wood because stain will raise the grain in the wood making the surface rough, a couple of coats then poly it should turn out just fine.

I would definitely test on scrap wood from the cabinets! You need practice and you need to get the color your wife wants.

Just looked at the timestamp on original post. How did this turn out?
