Hey!

I am building a 14x28 workshop w/ attic trusses that have a 2x6 bottom chord 2' OC. I just opened a bag of R21 unfaced fg batts that are 93" long. I was told to stuff them from underneath and friction would hold them up. Then come back and staple the visqueen underneath.

Well, the batt went up just fine, but it came down 20 seconds later. So unless I hear otherwise, I'll staple the 4mil vapor barrier first, then drop in the insulation from the attic. More ladder work, but should get it done.

I'll put up sheetrock later, so I think the visqueen should provide enough support, stapling what, every 6"?

I also need to locate my attic access now. Was thinking of a drop-down stair 4' from the front directly in the middle. I have the ground floor door right there too, so that area should never be blocked. It's 9' 6" from concrete to attic floor at this location.

I doubt I'd need the access any wider than the 2' truss spacing, which would avoid cutting a bottom chord.

Any ideas are appreciated :-)

Why not use blown insulation after the drywall is installed? It would be much quicker and most likely less expensive.

Good suggestion, but I have already started installing the batts. I just assumed it would be more expensive.

Thanks!

Okay, so I've gotten 20' of the 28' ceiling done. Used a lot of staples for the plastic. Still didn't stop me from falling through once when I tripped.

Anyway, how detailed should the tape job be? I was planning on using that clear 2" postal tape. The seams should be easy. More difficult where ceiling meets wall, though. I'll tape around the outlets too.

Amazing how much more I misstepped after the batts were in compared to before. I never once did that in all the time I spent up there before this. But during the installation, I missed the joists 3 times! My brain doesn't know as much as I do.

Well, it's done and I don't have to worry any more :-)
