I reside in Dallas, Tx area and am considering placing rigid foam board(rmax, dow, corning, etc) on top of my structural sheathing, and instead of tyvek. Taping the seams to elimate air infiltration. Has anyone has any experience doing this? Seems the same cost as tyvek but u gain abour r3.
any one have a reason not to do this in this area?

I am considering doing the same thing but still tyveking over the insulated foam board. I was concerned that this might make the wall to thick (this is my first home to build myself) but I have been assured by my mason that it is not. I am west of you in weatherford and I want as tight and efficient home as possible. I am installing an ERV in my HVAC system to make sure I remove the stale air and bring in fresh air. I figure it might cost a little more now but it will save in the long run.

I did my house that way. I used the tongue and groove 3/4 inch foam board over my 7/16 OSB. The 3/4 gives you and extra R4. According to the manufacturer (DOW) the foam board is a moisture barrier and so there shouldnt be any need to cover it with tyvek. It actually has a thin plastic facing on one side of it. Supposedly also cuts down on outside noise.
I have also seen it done that way.
I never have but have seen it.

Phil - Yes, you can do that. Wouldn't a radiant barrier product provide you with all that, and additionally a radiant barrier?
Verizon6000 - Be sure you still have a 1" drip plane (gap) between the brick and sheathing, no matter what product you choose. I don't see why you would use the Tyvek.
