We just started a company providing PDA software for construction companies. My job is to find out what you all need to help you stay organized while in the field so you can finish the projects on time and under budget. I'm wanting to know what the industry would like to see in a software product. I'm sure you have used or are using some sort of software that helps with the job and I would like to find out what you would like to see put into or taken away from construction software based on that experience. I hope to hear from you!

If you want us to test it for you at least provide a free trial.

Don't worry Grumpy. I should be getting it on Monday or Tuesday. Do you have a Pocket PC or a Palm?

So to provide some additional feedback to the OP. Some of the things from a GC standpoint would be..
1. Punchlists
2. Discrepancies
3. Change Order (not actual change orders but field directives that become change orders)
4. Alarms for deliverables
5. Without reviewing the software yet - I would imagine the deliverable management system like what I call a Delivery Matrix - where it ties directly into a schedule date.
6. Estimate or takeoffs - would work good for subcontractors such as roofing or siding, concrete too.
There are many more things that it could be useful for - but some may be redundant with the desktop.

I have this software right now and am doing a review on it. It has promise from what I've seen so far.

What capacity will you be using the software? Is it tracking submittals, deliveries, inventories?

Hi Rich. Thanks for the quick reply.

We are a manufacturer, distributor and installer of metal roofing systems for use in residential, commercial and industrial projects. The software would be used for two areas:

1. Inventories
2. Individual Project Management to include:

a) Individual project quotations
b) Initial (budgetary) costings for each proposed project
c) Project Deliverables throughout the life of the installation
d) Materials requirements throughout the life of the installation
e) Actual costings for each project
f) Timelines / Scheduling functionality

I appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thanks very much.

David

Very nice people over there. I haven't had time to actually sit down and do a detailed review. Cursory glances looked like it did what it was intended to do.
