View Full Version : Some changes
Just announcing a few changes to my websites.
First thing is I've added www.contractors-usa.com to the list. It's a paid for inclusion directory.. one time fee of 49.95. Feel free to link to it from your own websites :)
Second thing is I will be letting protoolreview.com go. The website coding etc will be incorporated into construction-resource.com .. probably construction-resource.com/tool-review/
I'll keep you updated (if anyone cares) :)

I've been meaning to write up some reviews for that site. Time just seems to be a small factor (translation: I get lazy when I'm not working)
So thats what you have been up too.
And this forum will be upgraded to the latest version of vbulletin (just purchased last night). So if the forum goes a little weird for a bit sometime in the next week - you'll know why.
Why the switch from phBB?
Traffic..speed..google..security.. ect
more base install features...not a bunch of hacks.

I haven't figured out how to use the features on this one yet :?

I thought so.
I heard phBB is running into problems with hackers.
It seems that it's a continual update process with phpbb.. it's free but has constant security problems.
Well - went pretty smoothly.. sorry about any downtime there was. I know there will be errors - mostly with attachments - and I'm working on it.
Thanks.
Now to get the template back up and running.. looking kind of ugly :)
Ok - I believe everyone should be able to login now.. again I apologize. If you can see this message but can't login - I suggest you empty your browsers cache and delete any cookies you have for this site.

Rich, I mean't smiles. What is an avatar?
An avatar is like the logo above this text
I cant add an avatar to my name.
Just letting you know.
I think I'm going to put a contest on sitepoint for the design of the site and new forum.. will cost me 300 probably.. I'll see what Malbar can do first.

Wish I was smart enough to put an avatar on my name.

Ok - pretty sure I found the setting.. pretty obscure location I know that.
ahem.. try it again :)
Ok - a design has been selected. Hopefully within the next week you will not have to look at vbulletin logo anymore :)
Along with the new design the following updated features will be available...
New Articles system
New Link Management system
New Forum (old news)
Tool Reviews
Hopefully this will benefit all users and increase the growth of the website. Our goal is to make this the only online resource for residential construction (we all have dreams)

that sounds cool. I'm looking forward to the tool review being built up. Have I mentioned that I'm lazy and still haven't written squat?

Rich, this sounds very "Pniky and the Brain"-ish. Instead of being the ONLY one, how about settling for the best, or most helpful, or most credible, ...?
Anyway, I like the amount of traffic you have here. It could use a little more, but too much more and you'll get lots of unwanted traffic. <hey, why is everyone looking at me?> I've been on other forums for photography, for woodworking, etc. Once the boom hits, the whole site takes a step down in quality. I hope that does NOT happen here!
I like this place. I look forward to the new look.
d2frette - only an expression
Ok - I believe all the "channels" are setup now. Just need to add some more information and tweak a few of the layouts. The latest one is the store.. what a dream that was compared to some others I've setup.
Now on to getting more links to complete the domination :) just kidding.

Rich, I keep getting a virus warning when I try to upload an avatar. Tried it a couple of months ago, and again just now. My copy of the file (.jpg) is ok (I've quadruple checked it . . . in a hurry!) The .gif the system sends back to display in my browser sets off Trojan alarms, though.
That's odd.. send me the image. builder AT construction-resource DOT com
Do you have any problems displaying other avatars??
tooltroll

Other avatars are fine . . . I edited my last post to add the file to it. I can see it just fine.
Something must be corrupting it when I try to upload it via the avatar menu- is it supposed to convert it to a .gif? I've always (tried to) uplload it as a .jpg, but the avatar menu then reloads (to display the uploaded/updated avatar) and the avatar it tries to display (which sets off alarms) is a .gif
Bob,
Did you get it worked out?
How does that work tooltroll?

03-02-2006, 09:24 PM
Nope. Soon as the .gif for my avatar popped up it freaked again. I deleted the file from my cache . . . no problems there, and I've not had this cause any problems on my machine- no mysterious new processes, nothing. I'm tempted to think it's a bug in Norton, except that it only seems to happen to my particular avatar on this particular site. I'd think if it were something on my machine, I'd get all sorts of alerts all over the web; lots of sites have dozens of little .gifs, .jpgs, etc. You'd think that some of them would trip a buggy alarm, but these are the ONLY alarms I've gotten in months. In the past, I've deleted the avatar from the site right away, but I'm going to leave it so we can see if it trips anybody else.
Attached are the warning screens that popped up.
That's pretty crazy.. I also use Norton and it doesn't give me any problems. Very odd.

That's really odd...because I see his photo as his avatar. It seems to work.
Tooltroll - would you like me to remove the green tint from the image?
David
03-03-2006, 06:21 AM
Ah, I did it anyway. If you don't like, I'll delete.

Uhhh . . . it took me quite a bit of waffling to come up with 'troll green,' actually :). Still getting the alert, unfortunately; just on the actual avatar .gif, the various attachments in this (and other) threads are fine.

So, tonight I figure "Might as well upload the avatar as a .gif and see what happens . . ."
I go to the avatar CP and the same old trojan warning pops up, and it occurs to me that I don't recall which file I used . . . So I come to this thread to check the copy I uploaded as an attachment, and POP! there's my avatar in all it's green glory.
The wierd thing is, a little later I hit the wrong link and went to my profile, and got the blank avatar/trojan warning again, hit another couple of links, then went back to the profile, and there's the avatar, all safe and sound. Bizarre.
. . . The next day, and it's doing it again. "In the wonderful world of tomorrow, computers will make everything easier and more efficient!"
Yeah . . . And I'm still waiting for my Dick Tracy wrist phone and the personal rocket pack 'they' have been promising since the 40's.:p
So I uploaded a .gif and it went away. 'nuff said.
