Your probably refering to software for house construction, but I thought I'd mention one for decks I just picked up.

Ultimate Deck and Landscape by Punch is a great 3D generating program for decks and landscape ( even allows the user to set planting age and see what the layout would look like after years of growth ). However, for construction of a deck, their referance to designing and the material / cost estimate is misleading. The program does not lay out posts, beams and joists. It only calculates the materials req and cost for the railings. Over all, a good visual tool to see the end result of your ideas but not something you can work off of for building a deck.

Check out REVIT software by Autodesk.
I switched after nine years of AutoCad, also by Autodesk.
I currently use both, but only rely on AutoCad for specific drawing tasks that Revit doesn't handle as well.

I just purchased Chief Architect 10. So far it does very well for 3d stuff.. but the CAD only stuff I'm still doing in Autocad 02/04. A friend of mine is using Arch Desktop and really likes it - it was a bit out of my price range.

I'm working for another contractor now - mostly doing commercial. They don't have any cad software, but in the works of getting them setup with Acad 2009, Acad architecture, and Revit (comes in a suite with all 3). Will be kind of interesting using BIM for estimating.

Architectural Desktop 2007 running as Autocad 2007

That quote was from 12-07-2006 and have since upgraded to Autocad 2009 at the office and Autocad Architecture on my PC at home. As soon as I get an upgraded office PC I am going all Architecture.

just switched to Sketchup after 4 years of using 3dsmax. Not as many advanced modeling and animation features, but hands down better for architecture. IMHO

Add v-ray and you're photo-realistic.

Also it's tied into google earth, and has a online warehouse of models that can be searched and loaded directly from within sketchup.
