Lately I've been hearing that the cost of building is starting to skyrocket. I don't really think the the workees are getting anymore money for thir labour in most cases.
One one web site that I frequent they are saying that sheetmetal for ductwork is climbing. It was strange but one guy was saying his price had gone way up and another guy from the other side of the country was saying (referring to the other guy's high cost) that he hadn't paid as little as that in years and his price was climbing even higher on top of what was already apparently a high price. Lumber in general is going up each week. ABS plastic and plumbing fitting are climbing.
A friend of mine was looking for someone to tape and mud only about 3000sq ft of drywall with another 10000 to come later. He got a price 0f $1.00 a square foot not including material. Apparently that price is astronomical but the drywall guy was busy as a one arm paper hanger.
Yet I was looking at some GFI's for about $10.00 and they were well over $25.00 3o years ago.

These price increases are killing me financially! Since the competition hasn't increased their prices, I can't either. OSB is now $17.79! It was under $6 a sheet last year at this time. When will the prices return to normal, or at least start to decline? Speculation welcome...lol

I think it'll be awhile yet. From all the people I've talked to - they see it starting to level off in awhile (5-6 months). They're hoping it'll start to decline sometime next year. It's all speculation though.

Thank George Bush for rebuilding Iraq. This is reportedly why plywood prices have skyrocketed. Plus with the economy rebounding business is picking up and life is supply and demand. In a few months the prices will come down after the manufactureres flood the market with their product.

We do commercial development and steel has climbed 300% in some cases...most of the steel is being bought by China and Afghanistan. Our sprinkler contractors are indicating that they are down to a 7 day supply where 30-40 is normal. The reason???? China, etc are willing to pay higher prices....Capitalism at it's best

Yeah I'll never understand why we don't take care of our own backyard before we take care of someone elses'. At least as far as the working person goes. Look at the cattle industry. Same thing - ranchers getting paid to not breed cattle. They would rather buy it from Argentina and Canada while our ranchers go out of business.
Dano - our copper price right now is only good for 2 days. That's crazy.

My father retired from the Bureau of Engraving (where they print the green stuff) and I remember him telling me years ago to invest in zinc...because they were beginning to use a majority of it in pennies in lieu of copper....should have listened..drop a penny dated in the 70's and do a recent vintage...."Poing" vs "Clunk".....

The gasoline in our area is about $4.80 A a gallon!!!!! And that oil comes from here (Canada). We apparently pay more for natural gas than you guys do yet it comes from here. It seems that if we ever attempted to slow down the flow of anything. water, oil, gas etc etc because we needed it for our own uses first we would be supposedly sued for failling to maintain the previous flow. It's a crazy world we are living in and I believe it will get 10 times worse in the very near future.

Dano's right on the button with the steel increases. And that 300% jump was almost over night. Thankfully the steel mills are finally getting a healthy price for their product and may be able to stay in business, however all the light gauge stuff is purely greed IMO.

Last June I got a quote on some 30 foot W18X46 I-beams for a bridge I wanted to build. At that time, I would have paid $428 each for the beams. Unfortunately, the project was held up due to a land title issue. When I finally ordered the steel this April I was shocked to hear that my cost for the beams had jumped up to $740 EACH!! The supplier also told me that most of the price increase had only occurred since December too! They also said they would only guarantee prices for 2 weeks on any quotes because the steel market was so volatile.

I also had an aggregate supplier raise their prices on the delivery of 3/4" crushed stone by over $2.00/ton in one week just because of the recent gas price increases...so they said... I'm sure greed is somewhere in the mix too...

I just paid 100.00 for a box of double dipped galv 10d's. At the nail supplier they said another increase this month and then another in July. :(

Here's what REALLY gets me going...

Just a couple months ago I was in 84 Lumber and needed 3 sheets of 11/32 BC plywood for a small project. I hadn't priced it recently and only winced mildly when I paid $33/sheet for it. (the weather was bad and 84 was closer...) Two weeks later, I was in Home Depot and the SAME STUFF, Georgia-Pacific, same markings and type, 11/32 BC was only $16.98/sheet REGULAR PRICE-NOT on sale! Doncha know I bought three sheets from HD and returned 'em to 84 for the diff!! Sorry 84, but there's "makin' a profit" and then there's "GOUGING"!! (is that spelled right? )

WHAT is UP with THAT??

Its about the shipping, the cost of fuel affects everything.
