I am looking at attaching a porch to my structure. The porch roof will be at a 3/12 pitch and the roof trusses are 10/12. What is the best way to tie in the rafters of the porch to the trusses (main structure)? Is it best to stack the porch rafters onto the trusses? If so, should this be done on top of the sheating or should I sheath down the 10/12 until I transition to the porch roof?

The other idea would be to put the porch rafters on the side of the trusses and build a vertical support which would rest on top of the 2x6 external wall. I would then just attach the rafters to the trusses side to side.

Thanks for the ideas.

Check those two posts for your answer. 2 conditions are outlined - one for top side bearing and one for wall bearing.

I went to one of the big box home stores and they were able to work with a truss manufacturer to use a room in attic truss at 10/12 and a modified mono truss at 3/12 that will bear on the exterior wall by notching the 90 degree corner of the mono truss and using a ledger attached to the edge of the main truss. The mono also has an extension of the top chord that intersects the top chord of the main trusses. This made me happy as I did not know if hand framing the porch would impact the main trusses. Sure will be easier.

Thanks for the help
